To be a valuable addition to your team, you don't have to be an elite dogfighter or a master of small corridors. Although it's nice to be a good fighter, a good tactician is often more successful. Don't move in slowly and try to drive them back into the flag room, but send one or two ships past the frontline defenders. Chances are that most of them will abandon their post to chase the two, which allows the rest of the team to break through.

Stay at your post
One of the worst things you can do is leave your post and mess around. If you are the first line of defense, stay the first line of defense. A common strategy is to send one or two ships in who try to get as close to the flags as possible. As they move in, alot of defenders find it necessary to chase those two harmless ships with five other defenders, opening up a huge gap for the attackers. Don't be one of those dumb defenders.

Staying at your post also has the benefit of an organized team. If 7 out of the 10 players on your team do the same thing the whole game (defense, offense, scouting), you will find that your team becomes alot stronger. Add a couple of "killers", and you have a decent chance of winning the jackpot.

Keep your buddies alive
Keeping your teammates alive may sound obvious, but most people don't realize how much this could be improved. Take a bomb for them, use your repel to save their lives instead of yours, or pick on the guy who is picking on your teammate so he can run to safety.

Keeping your mates alive also means that you have to watch your fire. Don't lob bombs at an enemy when two teammates are gunning him from close range, and don't mine in the middle of the flag room (repel!). Another dumb thing to do is repel when you are defending your base. If done improperly, all enemy shrapnel and bullets will be bouncing around at warp 9, tearing the ships of your poor teammates to pieces. Don't do this, or alot of teammates will be pissed at you, permanently :)

Use macros
Few things help a team more than a timely cry for help or a warning. If you see a couple of enemies coming towards your base, check which team they're on and call yellow or red alert as needed. Don't wait too long, your teammates need to recharge after they attached, and they probably need a few seconds too to be able to attach to you in the first place.

If you're in the enemy base and you need a bit more firepower quick to overpower them, stay safe and call for help. Don't wait too long though, or you'll be fighting an entire team of badasses who are pissed at you for attacking their base...

For all this stuff, you should have a set of Macros ready. Being able to call for help in a split second is a must in high competition zones like WarZone. Ask some people in the zone if you don't know which macros you are going to need.

Staying alive or sacrificing yourself
If there is a pile of mines in the way, you can either sit there till they go away (which isn't a good idea), or you can sacrifice yourself to let your team through. Sacrificing yourself makes that you miss out on all the fun, but your team will greatly appreciate it as they take the enemy flags stored behind. You can also charge into the enemy lines from behind when they are attacking your base. You will draw alot of fire, so your teammates can give the enemy a swift kick in the butt, which hopefully drives them out of your base.

Blocking a few bombs or distracting the enemy is also a good idea when they are chasing a friendly flag carrier. Your teammates will surely return the favor later if they are given the opportunity to. As mentioned above, you can also simply repel to keep your mate alive. The repel is in fact an extra life, and there's really no reason not to use it for the teammate.
