This page helps you out when you are having problems with SubSpace. Here you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions. If you can't find your answer here (please double check), then you can post your question on the Tech Support Forum.

While you are posting there, please keep the following in mind :

  • We need a good description of your problem. Don't post something like "SS doesn't work" or "I can't login". Please add details, it will save everyone alot of time
  • If you tried solving your problem with the solutions on this page, please mention that. That way we don't have to tell you what you already know
  • We're not always able to check the BBS every day, since most of us have to go to school or work. Your question will be answered eventually ; all you need is a bit of patience.

  • General troubleshooting
When installing SubSpace you'll probably encounter problems of some kind. The most common problems are listed below, as well as the solution to the problems. If you can't find your answer here, then you are encouraged to post your question at the Tech Support Forum. A couple of experienced players will check those boards on a regular base to answer all your questions.

  • Cannot allocate surfaces / DirectDraw error

This error is caused by incorrect video drivers, or a damage DirectX install. But before we go reinstalling stuff, try toggling the software emulation option in the View > Advanced Options menu. If that doesn't work, then try the following :

    - Get the latest video drivers for your video card

    - Reinstall DirectX. DirectX 3.0 is the minimum, and DX7.0 if preferred. (DX8.0 causes problems with subspace on some systems ; try 7.0 first)

    - Disable Active desktop, and set your desktop to 256 colors

    - Set your wallpaper to "None"

  • SubSpace won't start

This is caused by either your soundcard or your videocard. To fix this, you can :

    - Download and install the latest drivers for your sound -and videocard

    - Reinstall DirectX (version 7.0 is preferred ; 8.0 is not always compatible with subspace)

    - Disable Active desktop, and set your desktop to 256 colors

    - Set your wallpaper to "None"

    - Close all other running applications

    - Run subspace /emulate instead of just subspace.exe

  • SubSpace crashes when I use the "Find Servers" option

You should use a different server than the default one. Click on the "Find Servers" button, and enter the value "sscentral.vie.co.uk" (without the quotes). Remove all zones in the right part, and add zones from the left part. Hit OK when you are done.

If this does not work, then you can also try the following values :

    sscentral.subspace.inet.fi

    sscentral.ds98.com

  • It says I need to update SubSpace, but that doesn't work

You are probably infected with the Win95/CiH virus, a dangerous virus that can reduce all your precious files to rubble in mere seconds. Go to http://www.avp.com to download a scanner for removing this virus.

Some technical details : The virus installs itself in the subspace.exe file. When you login to a zone, subspace picks a few bytes out of itself, and verifies them with the same bytes of the subspace.exe file on the server. If the bytes don't match, then subspace thinks that it is an old version, and it will suggest to download the newest version. Removing the virus will fix your problem.

Since VIE does not exist anymore, subspace will give an error when it tries to download from there. Even if you download an update, the virus will infect subspace.exe again as soon as the update is finished, so that won't solve your problem anyways.

  • It says I am banned

This means that a moderator or Sysop kicked you out of the zone for doing something illegal multiple times. If the offense was very serious, they will ban your IP adress. This way, you can't play subspace anymore till they unban you.

If you didn't do anything wrong, then it's possible that you have been banned by accident. If a cheater was using the same ISP that you are using now, then it could be that SubSpace is not allowing you to login because it thinks that you are that cheater (when a cheater is banned, their entire IP range is banned).

You'll have to go to http://subspace.inet.fi to ask the administrators to unban you. They will give you further instructions to get you back in the game again.

  • My password is invalid

This means that you either entered the name of somebody else, or that you misspelled your password. If you're sure this is your nickname, and if you can't recall your password, you should go to http://edome.fi.soneraplaza.net/subspace/ and contact one of the billing administrators there.

If you are logging in for the first time and you get this message, then this means that the nickname you chose is already taken. Add a number at the end of the name, and the server will ask you to fill in a signup form.

REMEMBER : This information is only used to retrieve your password in case you lose it, or in case someone else "steals" your nickname. Nobody is going to pass this information on or use it for any other purpose than the one I just mentioned.

If you fill the fields with random text, then the server will delete your nickname, and it will ask you to fill in the form again the next time you login. If you don't want to enter your real name and adress, then make something up. If it looks decent enough, then the server will accept it and you will never have to worry about it anymore.

  • It says I'm not allowed to enter the zone

  • If you own a zone, then you can put up a list of people who are allowed to enter. Everybody else can't enter the zone unless you add their names to a list. This feature is used sometimes when developing a new zone, and it's also used alot in league zones.

There's nothing of interest going on in there for you, so you might as well pick a different zone and start playing there.

If you are sure that you are allowed to play in that specific zone, then check if your password is correct, and that you are not banned from the game.

  • SubSpace crashes when I enter a zone

    - If you have Mindspring software, or other ISP software installed on your PC, then you will need to uninstall it in order for SubSpace to work properly. The software conflicts with SubSpace for some reason.

    - Remove your windows wallpaper. Some wallpapers seem to annoy SubSpace, and cause it to crash.

The last thing you can try is to run
     subspace.exe /emulate
instead of just subspace.exe. To do this, create a shortcut to subspace, edit the properties of the shortcut and change the Command line part to :
     c:\whereever\the\game\resides\subspace.exe /emulate

  • I can't play in any of the zones

Make sure you downloaded the updates Serverlist. Click on File > Find Servers and enter the address SSCENTRAL.VIE.CO.UK. Remove all zones in the right part of the screen, and add new ones from the left part. When you're done, press OK and enter a zone of your choice. A backup-directory server is SSCENTRAL.DS98.COM, and the last one you can try is sscentral.subspace.inet.fi

If all three adresses don't work, then you should check your firewall settings. Do you have one enabled? Are you connected to the internet through a proxyserver or firewall? Or maybe your ISP is just too slow. AOL users will usually find that their connection is way too slow for decent gameplay. If you are trying to play at work or at school, ask your system administrator for help.

If this doesn't solve your problems, then you are encouraged to post your question at the Tech Support Forum.

  • In-game issues
When you get inside the game, you've bypassed most problems you can encounter. The last few known problems are listed below.

  • I hear shootings, but I can't see anything

This is probably because your screen resolution is set too high. Your videocard is capable of displaying it, but your monitor is not. Go to the Resolution menu, and select the resolution just above the one that is active now. Try logging into a zone now. If you still can't see anything, press ESC Q and keep lowering your resolution till you find one that works.

Other things that might fix this problem :

    - Set your desktop background to blank (no wallpapers)

    - Set the color depth of your desktop to 256 colors

    - Download and install the latest drivers for your sound -and videocard

    - Reinstall DirectX (version 7.0 is preferred ; 8.0 is not always compatible with subspace)

  • The animations are choppy

  • - Go to the View > Advanced options menu. There are four options in the top right corner. Play around with them, and check your framerat after every change. You can check your framerate when you are inside the game. Press ESC F and look at the red number on the top of your screen. A larger means a faster system configuration.

    - Set your desktop background to blank (no wallpapers)

    - Set the color depth of your desktop to 256 colors

    - Lower the resolution you play in. Maybe your computer just isn't fast enough to play in those high resolutions. - Go to the View > Options menu and turn off the options called "Rolling ships" and "detailed explosions".

  • The game keeps putting me in spectator mode

  • High packetloss is caused by internet routers that are overloaded. They can't process all the packets they receive, so they simply start discarding packets. If your weapon packets aren't coming through, then you can shoot till hell freezes over but you won't kill anything. The others simply won't see your bullets.

The only things you can do about this :
    - Change your ISP. Whatever you choose, don't choose AOL. AOL is one of the worst providers to choose when you want to play online games.

    - Play at a different time of the day. Routers will usually be less busy early in the morning.

  • All the other ships are jumping around

  • When your connection to the server is bad, then it will take a long time for a signal from your pc to reach the subspace server, and the other way round. You will see other people jumping around your screen because of this, and they will see you doing the same. It's a pain for both you and the other players, so follow the next steps to improve your connection :

    - Don't download anything when playing SubSpace (pretty obvious isn't it).

    - Close all programs, especially the ones that have something to do with the internet (ICQ, virusscanners, Getright, GoZilla).

    - Use an internet optimizer to optimize your internet settings, and make things a bit faster. Download one at www.download.com

    - Choose a different ISP. Providers like AOL are a really bad choice for online games. Pick a different ISP and try playing SubSpace again. Just keep trying till you find one with a fast connection to the subspace server.

    - Play at a different time of the day. There's less lag in the morning than in the evening.

  • I keep getting "Warning: No data coming from server"

  • This happens because the subspace server somehow wasn't receiving the packets from your computer anymore. If the server doesn't hear from you for a shoft while, then it will assume that your are offline, and it will stop sending data to you.

You get this errormessage if your internet connection is very slow (AOL, for example, is extremely slow). If you are living in australia for example, things can also be quite lagged. The further your signal has to travel to a server, the more computers are being used to pass it on. More computers means more delay, and if one of them is too busy transmitting other signals, then you're simply screwed.

Nobody can help you with this problem. The only thing you can do is to try using a different ISP, or to play at different times.

  • My ship keeps spinning!

  • Go to the View menu, click on "Options", and disable the Joystick there. If this doesn't work, try closing all other applications, and try hitting your CTRL / ALT / SHIFT / TAB keys a couple of times to make sure they are not physically stuck.
